JDF Racing protege, Chrissy Rouse, has been crowned 2013 Triumph Triple Challenge Champion after his 10th win of the season at Silverstone today.
The 17-year-old Geordie has taken the title with one round of the series still to go after doubling up with two wins at the Northants circuit.
The first win of the weekend came yesterday afternoon after he had qualified a lowly 10th on the grid while his series rivals Freddy Pett and Phil Atkinson started from the front row. But it did little to hold him up, as he made a searing start, passing seven bikes in the opening lap to start Lap Two in third place.
Moments later he was on the move again, this time scorching past Sam Cox and Phil Atkinson in one move to take the lead. From here he enjoyed a bit of a scrap with Atkinson for the lead, but it was the Geordie boy who emerged victorious as he took his ninth win of the season.
For today’s eight-lap race the teenager started from the front row in third place, and despite dropping down to fourth briefly in the opening lap, he quickly regrouped and took the place back before passing Atkinson and Pett again in a similar move. Pett came back and took the lead on Lap Five but Rouse was far from finished and on Lap Seven he set a new lap record before taking the lead back on the final lap.
It was more than enough for the teenager, who had only needed to finish in sixth place or higher to become champion.
“I didn’t have to win and before I went out there my dad and the team were telling me to take it easy and just bring it home but I have to admit now that I was never going to sit back and crawl home. I wanted to win the championship with a win.” he said.
“It feels fantastic. I came here looking to wrap the title up and we did it. Doing it with two wins and standing on the top step of the podium is the way every rider wants to do it and I’m just so happy. I think it may take a couple of days to sink in.
“They were two great races actually, I enjoyed them both. There was no room for hanging about there, and in the second one after being in the lead for a bit I knew there were a couple behind me so I decided to drop back a bit and see what the others had. I knew I could win it and there was no way I was coming home without a win. It’s a great feeling and I’m just over the moon.
“I have to thank everyone who has made it possible – the team, my sponsors, everyone who’s name is on the bike and has been involved with the team this year. We can now go to the final race at Brands Hatch and just enjoy it. It’s a great feeling.”
