JDF Racing's Cal Cooper exits final chicane at Thruxton

Cal Cooper Impresses in Round 2 of Pirelli 600 Superstock at Thruxton.

JDF Racing's 16 year old Manxman, Cal Cooper, backed up his fifth place finish at round one with an impressive seventh place in round two of the series.

Held on the fast Thruxton circuit Cooper, showed his potential on the fast tracks. Qualifying overall in ninth place the youngster had a good start and found himself in seventh place. However, as a result of a crash three quarters round the track resulting in a machine fire, the safety car was deployed. In the melee, Cooper found himself way back in eighteenth place at the restart. Having completed three of the fourteen laps Cooper had eleven laps to try and claw his way back into the major points.

Cooper made his way back toward the front in spectacular fashion carving through the field including passing four riders going into the final chicane two laps from the end of the race.
At the flag he had caught sixth man Nial Campbell and was just pipped on the line for sixth place, Cooper said after the race "I knew my pace was strong after warm up earlier in the day having been the fastest rider in dry conditions. We made a gearing change that allowed me to make use of the power of the bike as in the dry qualifying session from Friday the gearing was not quite there. In the race I was pushed out wide on the right hander after the start and lost eight places. It was so frustrating sitting behind the car and watching the laps countdown, but I kept plugging away and thought I’d nicked 6th in the end." At the flag he was just over a second from final podium man James Lodge.

JDF Racing Team manager John Davies said "It was a bit overgeared. In the first qualifying Cal knocked almost 1.5 seconds off from start of qualifying to topping the leader board in Sunday warm up. So unless the lads behind him found a lot more time we believed he could consolidate a placing similar to round one. We are very pleased with his first venture into this very competitive class sat BSB and are looking forward to our home round at Oulton."

Cal expresses his thanks to Paul Dedman Performance, Richard Adams of Maxton Suspension, Dean Teversham Roofing Ltd, IoM Sports Institute and Peter Duke of Duke Video, Goodridge, Motul Oils, Pipe Werx, and Italian performance products Rizoma.
