Cal Cooper makes successful debut in Pirelli 600 Superstock at Brands Hatch.
Manx Sports Aid recipient Callan Cooper made a successful debut in round one of the BSB Championship Pirelli supported 600 Superstock series.
Held on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, Cooper finished in fifth place in the 22 lap race. Qualifying in tenth place Cooper had a good start and on lap one had made up three places to take seventh place. Within a lap he had moved up to sixth place and was gaining on the leading five riders.
On lap thirteen fifth placed man Matt Ogden had slipped off allowing Cooper to move up to fifth. From this point of the race Cooper steadily moved away from the second group of riders finishing 5.138 secs ahead of Nial Cambell.
Callan said after the race "I decided to run at my own pace and keep things nice and smooth. I tried to get on the front row in qualifying but I never got a clear run after the second session and was red flagged, so I am pleased with the top five finish." Eighth after qualifying one, suspension changes made by the team gave Cooper more performance from the set up.
Cooper was lucky to make the grid. As a result of a water pump failure during morning warm up the team had only 40 mins to replace the pump. JDF-Racing's team manager John Davies said "It was a close run thing. Dave Hewitt jumped on the problem and dealt with it very deftly."
Cal Cooper is being fully supported in the series by race suspension manufacturers Maxton Engineering. Richard Adams of Maxton Engineering "We have been watching Cal over the last couple of years as a possible recipient of support. Last year racing with JDF Racing in the Aprilia RRV series it was confirmed he was ready for full support winning the RRV450 Challenge title in impressive style."
In addition to support from Maxton Engineering Cooper is being mentored by 2003 WSB Neil Hodgson, and supported by Dean Teversham Roofing Ltd (Dorset), IOM based Paul Dedman Performance, Duke Video, Manx Sports Aid, Motul, Goodridge, silencer manufacturers Pipe Werx and Italian manufacturer of performance parts Rizoma.
