Ben Luxton competes in Moriwaki Junior Cup at Assen.
Stockport teenager Ben Luxton had his first taste of international competition in the final round of the Moriwaki Junior Cup over the weekend of 13/14 October.
Held on the famous Dutch TT course Luxton had never seen the track or the bike before turning up for the Friday free practice. Luxton said "I fancied a run on a Moto 3 type bike as a one off so my team JDF organised a wild card ride for me as a bit of a jolly.
I was surprised how small the bikes were and it took a bit of getting used to after my 450 Aprilia. It was cold and wet in the first session and I tipped off on the last corner before the start and finish straight, there was little damage to the bike however."
Luxton impressed the organisers of the series, Ten Kate Racing, with his approach and over the three days he quickly adapted to the power characteristics and handling of the small machine. Qualifying in ninth position overall Ben posted a quicker time than local rider and Redbull Rookie front runner Scott Deroue.
The damp conditions suited the Stockport rider. In Q2 he was lying sixth fastest with two laps to go but was pipped by two local riders Karlo Slager and Eduard Troost. Luxton said "I was pleased with qualifying however the race results were ok but not as good as I would have liked. I am a bit too big for the bike!
If we could have changed gearing it would have improved the result however to try and make it fair for everyone we are not allowed to mess with the gearing. It was a great experience riding abroad and I cannot wait to get back there on a larger bike in the next 12 months or so."
Team boss of JDF Racing, John Davies "We have been looking at the series closely over the past 6 months as a means of getting our very talented youngsters on Moto 3 type machines riding on the continent with other similar talented riders from across Europe.
With the recent announcement of the series organisers of the Moriwaki 250 Junior Cup working closely with the Red Bull Rookies management team it was time to dip our toe in the water. We would ideally like to take a three rider team to the series in 2015. To this end we are considering fielding a couple of youngsters in 2014 as Wild Card entries."
